Checklist for Your Long-Distance, Road Trip Move

Checklist for Your Long-Distance, Road Trip Move.

Here are a few things you should add to your checklist when planning your long-distance, road trip move!

Long-distance moves are even more stressful than your average move. On top of packing and transporting everything you own, you also have to contend with several days on the road and the logistics of food, lodging and safety.

Finding the right out of state moving company is key to your success. But besides having a long distance mover, you also need the right plan in place to make your move easier. Here are a few things you should add to your checklist when planning your long-distance, road trip move:

Plan Ahead

Do as much as you can as earlier as you can. Trying to put together a move in a couple of weeks will just make you stressed and increase the chances that you will overlook things that can make the move go wrong. Give yourself as much time as you can to put together your moving plan — preferably at least a few months. The bigger the move, the more time you should give yourself to plan.

Pack Essentials to Have on the Road

You’ll need some essentials in the car or truck with you while you are driving to your new location. Keep plenty of food and beverages on hand so you don’t have to stop for simple pick-me-ups. Save your stops for full meal and break times. Also pack essentials like first aid supplies, books or DVDs for entertainment (not while driving, obviously), a neck pillow, blanket, and other items to make you comfortable.

You could be in the car for several days. Make sure you have everything you need so you don’t have to make unnecessary stops.

Make Hotel Reservations

Don’t try to drive straight through to your new destination if it will take more than eight to 10 hours. You’ll compromise your safety and the safety of other drivers by driving while you are tired. Plan ahead by making hotel reservations for each night. Of course, that means that you’ll have to make a driving itinerary so you know where you are expected to be each night of your trip.

Don’t try to wing it and find hotels along the way. You could end up not being able to find a vacancy and get stuck on the road.

Plan for Your Pet

If you have pets, you’ll need to make special accommodations for them when you move. You need to set up a large crate that provides them plenty of space to move and a comfortable place to sleep. Make sure the crate has enough room for food and water bowls, and include a few toys or treats to make them comfortable. Make plenty of stops along the way to give them a chance to exercise and de-stress.
